NWSP 354.0.R1 Standard Test Methods for Adult Incontinence Products

While the issue of aging is constantly mentioned, the market for adult incontinence products is growing rapidly. Aging population across the globe is a key growth driver for manufacturers of incontinence products, as the incidence of incontinence rises with age.
Compared with women's sanitary napkins and children's diapers, my country's adult incontinence products industry started late, but the overall market has developed rapidly in recent years. According to Euromonitor data, the market size of my country's adult incontinence products has reached 6.12 billion yuan in 2020 , 2006-2020, the compound growth rate of market size is as high as 20.49%.

According to Svetlana Uduslivaia, Regional Head of Research Americas at Euromonitor International, the growth trend in the adult incontinence market remains positive, with all regions of the world seeing significant opportunities in this segment. The aging trend is clearly driving demand further, but also innovation: in terms of product forms for women and men.
Euromonitor expects this positive growth to continue over the next five years, with the adult incontinence market expected to reach $14 billion in retail sales by 2025.

The domestic detection method of adult incontinence pads, we have shared with you in the previous article. Friends who want to review the previous article, you can click this path to read - which baby diaper performance is the most concerned about you?
In order to better simulate real usage conditions, the following is a brief introduction to the performance testing method for adult incontinence products commonly used in Europe - Absorption Before Leakage (ABL, Absorption Before Leakage) - using a human body model to test the absorption capacity and liquid diffusivity of samples before leakage .

§  Why use the absorbency before leakage to measure the absorbency of the product?
§  1. Absorption before leakage (ABL value) represents the quality of the product and the ability to prevent side leakage;
§  2. Bad material selection, product design flaws will affect ABL.
§  Why is it necessary to test with the human body model to evaluate the absorption performance?
§  Because the absorption performance of the product is affected by the following factors:
§  The pressure on the product (dressing pressure and external pressure);
§   The posture of the user (e.g. sitting, standing, moving, lying down);
§   The flow and frequency of the user's urination, and the direction of the organ during urination;
§  The influence of product composition and design features, such as shape, contour, material of the absorbent core;
§  The elastic material and type of fastening system used to keep the product close to the body;

Absorb Before Leak Test (ABL)
01 Test range
 Test absorbent care products for how much liquid they absorb before they start to leak.
 The test method recommended by EDANA (European Disposable Hygiene Products and Nonwovens Association) is the laboratory test closest to the actual use. Use realistic mannequins to simulate lying down, sitting down, and moving to evaluate product absorption capacity and speed. Can test: baby diapers, children's pull-up pants, adult incontinence products, feminine care products.

03 Test process
1. Unfold the incontinence pad on the test stand, inside up. The mannequin is placed flat on the test bench, with the buttocks just pressed against the incontinence pad.
2. Adjust the incontinence pad so that the genitals (male or female) are in the middle of the incontinence pad, while keeping the incontinence pad against the thighs, and if the incontinence pad has an elastic cuff, turn the cuff with the raw edge facing outward. 3. Adjust the incontinence pad so that the manikin buttocks and abdomen have approximately equal contact area with the incontinence pad. Tie the buckle of the incontinence pad around the waist of the mannequin and fix it. 4. If the incontinence pad has no buckle, like underwear, you can put the incontinence pad directly on the model like underwear, and at the same time, make sure that the incontinence pad is close to the thigh and the waist is tight enough. 5. Make the mannequin that was lying flat to the right 30 degrees along the longitudinal axis (the axis where the spine of the mannequin is located), and fix it in this position, and then start the test.

6. The genitals are connected to the test fluid, and the computer controls the length of time for the test fluid to be discharged from the genitals and the corresponding flow rate. Generally, the total amount of test fluid discharged is 160 ml, which is completed within 30 seconds. In order to be closer to the real application of human body excretion, within these 30 seconds, the discharge amount of the test liquid is different in each time period.
7. The test liquid is drained within 30 seconds. If there is no leakage of the incontinence pad within five minutes, start the second 30-second voiding...the interval between each voiding is 5 minutes until the leakage of the incontinence pad is detected. 8. After the experiment is completed, record the amount of liquid absorbed by the incontinence pad and the corresponding measurement time.

04 Test focus
A. In order to accurately simulate real use scenarios, the standards for mannequins are clearly defined, including model material, hardness, density; size, waist circumference, groin angle, leg circumference, distance between legs, hip curvature, genitals (different for men and women, different sizes) ), etc. Even the utensils that keep the model at an inclination have specific material size requirements (numbers accurate to grams, millimeters).
B. The human body actually emits urine, and the flow rate is not at a linear velocity. The discharge time and flow rate are controlled by software, and the test liquid is discharged according to different discharge rates within 30 seconds. C. Judgment of penetration will also be done automatically by instrument detection. When the instrument detects leakage of liquid, the test will automatically stop. D. In order to improve the test efficiency, large-scale third-party testing institutions and incontinence pad production factories in Europe generally use testing equipment with one pool and four pumps, that is, use 4 mannequins to test 4 incontinence pads at the same time to improve the testing speed. E. With the improvement of market requirements, laboratories will also use standing and walking mannequins to test the anti-seepage performance of incontinence pads.

Libao Technology is the agent of the personal hygiene product detection system produced by SGS in France, which uses realistic human models, babies or adults to simulate and automatically control urination parameters. Anthropomorphic mannequins and weights to simulate real-world usage to measure the Absorption Before Leakage (ABL) of different hygiene products.
